In hilly and mountainous regions, generally exhibiting characteristics of being "narrow, small, scattered, and steep." Coupled with inadequate field infrastructure such as farm roads, agricultural machinery faces challenges in "access to fields, operation, and transportation," making traditional machinery ill-suited for these conditions. Consequently, the development of agricultural mechanization in these areas still encounters significant bottlenecks. Currently, most agricultural machinery used in hilly and mountainous areas is a modified version of models designed for flat terrain, while specialized, lightweight equipment suitable for small plots and steep slopes remains scarce. Meanwhile, development in the equipment sector remains uneven: while mechanization levels are relatively high in land preparation and cultivation, key processes such as sowing and harvesting, as well as those involving specialty cash crops, exhibit extremely low mechanization rates. Investigating key agricultural machinery technologies in hilly and mountainous regions is of great significance for advancing agricultural modernization and ensuring food security. To this end, IJABE has launched the Special Collection on Key Technologies and Equipment for Agricultural Machinery in Hilly and Mountainous Regions. We sincerely invite those engaged in the research of key technologies for agricultural machinery equipment in hilly and mountainous areas, as well as the application of smart agriculture and plant protection in hilly and mountainous areas. Together, we aim to establish a high-quality academic exchange platform. The collection is scheduled for publication in phases by 2027.
